Lake Fayoum was created by building the Aswan Dam. Previously it was only filled by floodwaters. This is the largest man made lake in the world. It is 40 X 30 miles.

This is where the north Egypt capitol of Fayoum was located. Joseph served Pharaoh in 2100 BC. This is the pyramid called Hawara. It was built in 1270 BC and is built of mud-brick.

It is 900 feet square and 450 feet tall. All other pyramids have a north facing entrance while this one has a south facing entrance.

This entrance is currently flooded about 30 feet down. Quite a few of us got to go into the tunnel.

This is a close-up of the brick work. It was originally smooth and covered with limestone. This is the military escort we had when traveling outside the city.

This is Ramses II. He was the pharaoh in 1290 BC.

These images were made as to how they wanted to be in the afterlife, not how they actually appeared. This is the Sphinx of Memphis. Memphis the capital of north Egypt.

This is a copy of the original Ramses II above which stands over 30 foot tall. This is where we had lunch at a restaurant called  Carvery.

Here we are eating together. This is the first and oldest pyramid built in 2570 BC.

This was the gateway to the pyramid area. This gate had 42 columns separating statues of each of the Egyptian providences.

These were the first columns in recorded history. We next visited the great pyramids we were already familiar with.

We all got to pose in front of the magnificent structures. This is the Sphinx with the pyramids behind.

Many of us got to take a real camel ride. It was quite an experience.

The last place we stopped was at the Abu Simbel Papyrus Institute where Paintings are made on papyrus. Here we were shown how papyrus is made.

Today is Ruth Dunn's birthday and we all celebrated it after supper.
